Employment Opportunity: Orchestra Director

The La Crosse Area Youth Symphony Orchestras (LYSO) is currently hiring for an additional Orchestra Director.

LYSO is a non-profit organization focused on providing opportunities to skilled and dedicated youth musicians to further develop and showcase their skills in the symphonic tradition, while enhancing their lives and the community around them. Each season is aligned with the traditional school year and divided into two nine-week semesters. Students rehearse for two hours on Sunday afternoons from 4-6 p.m. at Central High School in La Crosse, with each semester culminating in a concert.

The Orchestra Director will be expected to complete the following tasks:

  • Work with other staff to facilitate auditions
  • Select literature for the orchestra
  • Prepare and rehearse the orchestra
  • Communicate progress and setbacks with other staff and board
  • Promote LYSO’s mission  

Successful applicants will possess the following skills and strengths:

  • Expertise in the symphonic tradition
  • An understanding of how to work with and teach student musicians
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
